One of the BECCS projects was cancelled while in the very last maturity stage, the “Execute” stage before operations were commenced. This was a project in Greenville, Ohio, where CO2 from an ethanol plant would have been stored in the underlying Mount Simon sandstone formation (the same formation as in project number 5 in this list).

The project had been awarded a 67 million USD contract from the US Department of Energy and was led by Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio, within the framework of the Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP). Due to local opposition in Greenville, the project was cancelled in 2009.
